Tonight, I passed my first test in Muay Thai. I was surrounded by my Black Belt USA friends, many of whom are now like family. Testing in front of all of them was an honor because everything I learned came from the people in that room.
As Master King and Dr. King awarded me with my first arm-band, I was filled with so much gratitude and joy. I had worked so hard to achieve this moment, and they had been so patient and generous with me as their student.
When I got home tonight, I suddenly remembered why I signed up for Muay Thai in the first place. I remembered the unfortunate event of having my back against the wall on the light rail on my way to school; a stranger cursing me and threatening me as I tried to remain calm; I couldn’t run, and no one was there to help me or back me up.
That day was January 16th, 2019, and three days later, I signed up for 7 months of Muay Thai at Black Belt USA and I have loved every minute of it.
We are a community of like-minded individuals, all seeking to grow and help each other grow in the process, and I could not be more grateful for the lessons I have learned and the trials I have faced. Master King and Dr. King have helped me build outer and inner strength through the practice of Muay Thai. I have found peace in my heart despite the negative experience I had on the light rail. I carry a renewed confidence with me, not because I'm learning a martial art, but because I am happier with who I am than I was before.
